The ITENE research centre showcased innovative technologies and tailor-made services to meet the challenges of the plastics circularity industry at PRSE 2024 (Plastics Recycling Show Europe), which took place on 19-20 June in Amsterdam.

Under the slogan ‘Leading change to plastics circularity’, the technology centre showcased innovative waste pre-treatment technologies, tailor-made recycling processes and services for scaling up and assessing the recyclability of plastics and their suitability for food contact. For this purpose, it had a stand – T23 – at the RAI Amsterdam Convention Centre, which hosted the fair.

Regarding the pre-treatment process of plastic waste, ITENE presented innovative processes to improve the valorisation of plastic waste and its reintroduction into the value chain. Specifically, it will present its capabilities in waste characterisation and conditioning, delamination of multilayer plastic structures and decontamination and odour removal.

Visitors to the stand were also able to delve into the tailor-made recycling and scale-up processes offered by ITENE, namely physical-mechanical recycling, reactive extrusion, selective solution recycling, chemical recycling (solvolysis), biological recycling and thermochemical recycling.

Regarding the evaluation of the recyclability of plastics and food safety, the technology centre offered its services of theoretical and experimental recyclability, quality assurance evaluations to ensure compliance with food contact requirements and challenge tests. In addition, it presented its compostability assessment services, for which it has an experienced and recognised laboratory for carrying out industrial and domestic biodegradation and compostability tests in accordance with American, European and Australian standards.
