Carbon footprint, Environmental Product Declarations, Life Cycle Assessment and eco-design
The European Green Deal, which aims to achieve climate neutrality by 2050, sets Europe’s future course towards reducing environmental impact.
At ITENE, we carry out life cycle assessments (LCA) to determine the environmental impacts associated with the stages of the life cycle of a product, process or service and quantify the carbon footprint. And, if you need it, we can develop Environmental Product Declarations (EPD) with the Environdec® system, and even verify them if you already have an LCA for your product.
In addition, we quantify and prepare your company’s emissions inventories in order to:
- Comply with the obligations of the MITECO Carbon Footprint Registry in accordance with Royal Decree 214/2025 of 18 March
- Verify your corporate carbon footprint with ISO 14064.

Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) and Environmental Product Declarations (EPD)
Through life cycle assessment (LCA), we analyse the environmental impacts associated with the stages of the life cycle of a product, process or service. This allows us to:
- Understand the environmental impact of each product, process or service, select the most sustainable alternative and identify areas for improvement.
- Conduct critical review studies for comparative LCA reports aimed at the public or for eco-modulation systems.
- Improve communication strategies in terms of sustainability and image, as well as corporate social responsibility and green marketing.
In addition, we develop life cycle assessments (LCAs) specifically geared towards the Environdec® Environmental Product Declaration (EPD) system, guaranteeing reliable results based on scientifically sound data and industrial practice.
EPDs, based on the UNE EN ISO 14025 standard, provide quantifiable and verifiable information on the environmental performance of a product, material or service, quantified using a Life Cycle Assessment (LCA).
The results of EPDs are presented to a non-expert audience and explained in a way that ensures effective communication and enables environmental improvement measures to be taken at company level. We can also verify EPDs within the framework of the Environdec® programme.
At ITENE, we have the capacity to both develop and verify EPDs, as we have an individual EPD verifier approved under the Environdec® EPD programme, with global geographical coverage.

Carbon footprint (CF)
The carbon footprint is an indicator measured in CO2 equivalent (CO2-eq) that quantifies the potential environmental impact on climate change of greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions generated by a product, service or organisation. This indicator allows organisations to assess their contribution to climate change, both in terms of their products and their activities as a company, by understanding what GHG emissions they have and where they come from, with the aim of reducing them.
1. Product/corporate carbon footprint (CF):
We quantify the carbon footprint and the amount of GHG emissions measured in CO2 equivalent released into the atmosphere by your product or your company and identify areas where you can make improvements. A comparison between products will also enable you to select the most sustainable alternatives. We can also help you in the process of verifying your company’s emissions inventory according to the ISO 14064:2019 standard.
Methodology:
- For products and services in general: ISO 14040:2006, ISO 14044:2006, ISO 14067:2018 and PAS 2050:2011. We prepare reports for product carbon footprint verification audits in accordance with ISO 14067:2018 and also for the TfS (Together for Sustainability) benchmark used in the chemical industry.
- For corporate carbon footprints: ISO 14064:2019, including assistance with emissions verification and voluntary carbon footprint registration by the Ministry of Ecological Transition and Demographic Challenge.
- For transport and logistics services: UNE-EN 16258:2013. ISO 14083:2023.
- For bio-based products: EN 16760.
2. LCA/HC Calculator
Tool for simple assessment of environmental impacts associated with all stages of the life cycle of a product, process or service. It allows you to understand the environmental impact of your products, processes or services and select the most sustainable alternative, as well as identify areas for improvement in terms of carbon footprint and LCA. Methodology based on ISO 14040:2006 and ISO 14044:2006.
3. Obligations of the MITECO’s Carbon Footprint Registry according to Royal Decree 214/2025, of 18 March
We perform the carbon footprint calculations necessary to comply with the obligations of the MITECO Carbon Footprint Registry if you are affected by Royal Decree 214/2025, of 18 March. And if you are not affected, we can also help you participate in the voluntary registry, including in compensation projects.
4. Carbon footprint calculation obligations under the Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism (CBAM)
If you import goods from countries outside the European Economic Area, we can help you check whether your imported goods are subject to CBAM and calculate the carbon footprint of those imported products for Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism reporting.
Eco-design
Eco-design is a methodology that allows packaging or other products to be designed according to environmental criteria from the conception and development stage onwards. Eco-design of packaging and products allows:
- The environmental impact to be reduced before it occurs.
- Costs to be saved from the design stage onwards.
- Align with current legislation.
- Comply with the criteria for obtaining certain eco-labels (European Ecolabel, Blue Angel, White Swan, etc.).
- Improve brand image and differentiate yourself from the competition.
At ITENE, as experts in packaging sustainability, we have developed a large number of eco-design projects and implemented measures such as:
- Weight and volume reduction to optimise the container-content ratio.
- Introduction of alternative materials with lower environmental impacts or greater potential for recycling or recovery.
- Simplification of packaging system components.
- Improving the distribution process by adapting bundle packaging or redesigning the palletizing structure.

Other specialised services: Eco-efficiency and water footprint
- Eco-efficiency. We calculate the relationship between the economic value of your product or service and the sum of environmental impacts throughout its life cycle. This enables you to reduce the consumption of resources and waste in addition to increasing the durability and functionality of your product. Methodology: ISO 14045:2012, ISO 14040:2006 and ISO 14044:2006.
- Water footprint. We quantify the total volume of fresh water used to produce everyday goods and services. This enables firms to ascertain the hydric impact of their organisation or product and to identify areas of improvement. Methodology: ISO 14046:2014, ISO 14040:2006 and ISO 14044:2006.
